Two singles to look at today starting with Andrea Corr (yes, the one from those Corrs). Her second single ‘Champagne From A Straw’ is taken from her Nellee Hooper produced (what was he thinking) album ‘Ten Feet High’, apparently Bono was also at the helm for this album as well, and it would seem being God couldn’t help him out in making this single anything less than annoying.

Sugary enough to give you fillings this twee little number is the type of thing that gives the likes of Terry Wogan wet dreams with its bland wandering by the numbers vocal and el cheap Casio calypso backing track. I didn’t expect miracles but for goodness sake you would have thought a producer who worked with the likes of Massive Attack and Bjork could have polished up something a little better than this wretched nonsense. Abysmal.

Its out on the 27th August.

Ash return with their new single ‘End Of The World’, gone is the fire and brimstone of their previous offerings as they alarmingly step off the pedal for this somewhat low key affair. Tim Wheeler is on surprisingly decent vocal form and doesn’t rely on the usual wall of sound guitar noise to bolster his efforts for this track. It’s accomplished in the production stakes but its gentler sensibilities should see it gracing the credits of some schmaltzy American film at some point in the future. Not hideous by any stretch but this is definitely a band that can do so much better.

Still Ash remain as ever a sparkling live prospect and you can catch them in London at the Brixton Carling Academy on the 3rd November, tickets are available from the usual outlets and the single is out on September 10th
