I took one look at the sleeve to Aly & AJ’s album sampler ‘Insomniatic’ and was convinced that I wasn’t going to like it. You know the score, two American teen girls, blonde hair, teeth and tan. Posed in a slightly suggestive manner for their adoring public etc etc.

Bad call on my part, never it would seem judge a book by its cover. What they have to offer ain’t bad at all. A nice blend of bright pop rock with some interesting skewed influences. ‘Potential Breakup Song’ lures you in with its 50’s style bright piano layered with uber cool euro production sensibilities. ‘Bullseye’ drenches the listener in more traditional rock clichés but broods nicely and is topped with an accomplished little vocal that doesn’t go all Britney on us. ‘Like Whoa’ straddles somewhere between the two in terms of production that it has to be said is where these two show their strengths. Just when you think you know which direction a song is going to take it heads somewhere else entirely.

The album ‘Insomniatic’ is released in October 2007, keep your eyes peeled for its release. This could be one of the surprises of the year.
