While X Factor and its ilk have undoubtedly been very kind to the bank balances of the likes of Simon and Sharon it has to be said that despite those brief post competition explosions of activity that signal a bright career for the winners and in this case runners up on the show, careers invariably fizzle quickly and the scarf waving grannies in the audience soon find something new to moon over when the next show comes along.

This could be the case with Journey South as they bring us their latest offering “Home”, a collection of invariably bland and beige mediocrity. Twelve songs that wash in and out of each other with the longevity comparable to watching water hitting a sandcastle. It’s a formula that might have gotten them so far in the show but in the real world it’s woefully limited. Strumming guitars and earnest vocals are simply not enough in the grand scheme of things and some variety to their performances and some songs of note would be nice. A more established artist would think twice about using most of this material as B side fodder and its definitely something I wouldn’t consider as worthy of further listening pursuits. Its says in the press pack that this album is the results of writing with some of the world’s best writers. I can only think they were having one hell of an off day…

The album ‘Home’ is out on 22nd October with the single ‘What I Love About Home’ precedes it on the 15th
