Daylight returns to The Arctic Circle this weekend (21st June) the London musical collective showcases the talents of Fine Crystal at 12:15pm. Fine Crystal represents the solo (for now) project of Rowan Coupland who mixes guitars, accordion, clarinet, violin, keyboards and home made drum kits. In fact pretty much everything bar the kitchen sink. Despite utilising such a broad canvas for his sound the results have a gentility about them which belies the ramshackle potential. Vocally he creates an air of intimacy and playfulness at the same time. Have a listen to his myspace page (link below) for tracks like ‘Waiting For A Second Sign’ and ‘Breathing Life Back’ for wonderful examples.

Following at 1pm are Sons of Noel and Adrian, hailing from the Midlands but currently residing in Brighton it would be easy to pigeon hole this act in the folk genre but despite their acoustic leanings there is more depth to them than that. With vocal deliveries that are shaped in an almost blues tinged fashion the use of light percussion gives them a somewhat indomitable windswept air (on tracks such as ‘Indigo’). Yet just when you think you have the measure of them, they slide sideways into slightly moody electronic territory (listen to ‘Isan Boat’ and you’ll see what I mean). Their songs ring out like omens and portents. Its not every day you find that in music. As always the event is free so make this an avenue of exploration this weekend.
