Black music invades S?nar’s stages.

Classic names and contemporary proposals coexist on a line-up including hip-hop, dub, reggae, jazz, funk, and disco music.

Tribal rhythms and slave songs of the American South. Blues and jazz. Reggae and dub. Rock, soul, funk, hip-hop and disco. Electro, house, R&B, jungle and grime. The black music community has always been the creative compass indicating what at a given moment in time contributed to higher doses of transgression, audacity, rupture, intuition and visions of the future.

Sonar’s history reflects the irrefutable truth of this fact: its programme has included some of the most representative names in contemporary black sound De La Soul, Madlib, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Frankie Knuckles, A Guy Called Gerald, So Solid Crew, all pillars of scenes and genres spawning numerous sub genres and outlining the path of urban music over the last three decades.

In this 2006 edition, S?nar reiterates, once again, its commitment to black music culture with a line up full of representative figures as well as artists in parallel contexts who have not been able to escape the spell of black sound. This year, different styles and influences provide a panoramic view of what’s currently going on in the areas of hip-hop (DJ Shadow presents The Hyphy Movement feat. Keak Da Sneak, Digable Planets, Ugly Duckling, Rahzel & DJ JS-One, Pete Philly & Perquisite, Jake The Rapper, DJ Krush), turntablism (Diplo & A-Trak, Birdy Nam Nam), nu jazz and acid jazz (Gilles Peterson, Mw?slee), house (Kenny Dope), techno (Jeff Mills), electronics with a soul (Nightmares On Wax), soul-funk with a rap emphasis (DJ Vadim’s One Self project) and ghettotech (Disco D). CHIC feat. Nile Rodgers, one of the founding fathers of disco music, deserves special mention, as do representatives of Jamaican sound, from Linton Kwesi Johnson’s spoken word to Dom Sotgiu’s reggae wisdom to the reinvention of dub by Pole, Bus Featuring MC Soom-T, and Eliot Lipp.
