I recently attended Union Dance’s production Sensing Change which is a mix of digital arts, heart pumping music and dazzling contemporary dance.

I personally hail from the b-boy breakdancing days (old school cardboard and sore heads) and what moved on the stage at Richmond Theatre draws from a fascinating mixture of hip-hop, jazz, martial arts, asian and afro-caribbean contemporary dance. It was really interesting to see some moves similar to my own (although performed at a much grander scale) put into routines which oozed class.

The music was amazing and at times I felt like I was in a nightclub being entertained by out of the ordinary dancers.

The eight performers on stage put on a superb show, gluing my eyes to them throughout the evening. They were all fit as a fiddle and obviously all train an enormous amount – it wasn’t unusual during the performance to see a female pick up a male off from the floor.

If you are interested in contemporary dance then this show is great value and you won’t be disappointed.
