The premise of Go:Audio’s debut mini EP ‘Woodchuck’ is nothing new or frighteningly original but then in the current market where everyone finds a genre and clings to it like limpets they can be forgiven for their faux US pop rock shenanigans (you’d never guess they were from London). The songs rely on tried and tested formulas of good riffs and hooks punctuated with buzzing guitars but here’s the rub. Synths burst through their musical storm clouds like little chinks of sunlight and illuminate a potential for this lot to move in a more dance friendly direction if they so wished.

The four track sampler I was sent actually bodes well for the band, they can rabble rouse and drop anthems when they need to (particularly on ‘So Quiet You Were’). The highlight for me however was the Secret Handshake mix of Doesn’t Really Matter. In this instance the guitars are held back on a leash and there is something a little cinematic in scope for this otherwise morose little offering.

Interesting stuff, whether they are destined for lasting greatness is unlikely but for now they are offer a brief respite from a lot of the lesser offerings.
