So my latest assignment is to review the debut self titled album by Daughtry. Apparently the biggest selling album in the US this year. The fastest selling album in Soundscan history and still in the top ten twenty seven weeks after release.

Well that really doesn’t say a lot about American audiences.

Chris Daughtry was a finalist during the 5th series of the show American Idol in 2006. In the end he finished fourth. Still never let it be said that such shows will not milk the possibilities till they are wrung out like a sodden bar towel.

What you have here is standard American rock fodder, the guy has a voice of that you can have no doubt. Sadly it’s a voice we have heard a million times before, you know the one I’m talking about. Think Nickelback and their ilk, with that straining on the lavatory finesse that this genre does so well. Then of course there are the songs, always tacking on to the bittersweet side of love with titles like ‘Over’, ‘Used To’ and ‘Gone’ et al. Then of course there is the obligatory guest performance from a big name, in this instance it is none other than once upon a time axe man with Guns and Roses Slash

Sadly its dated before it even hits the CD player and I find myself wondering what kind of audience honestly buys this, not one that is looking for anything new innovative or original I’m afraid.

Out on the 20th August with the single ‘Its Not Over’ on the 6th August
