There’s an obligatory checklist for any rap artist that fancies throwing his cap in the ring these days, it’s nothing new. Assemble fifteen tracks including skits, slap together a host of guest artists to bounce off during the course of said tracks. Check subject matter, bad ass persona, obligatory gun tucked down down waistband of pants, Check jewellery, tales of consumption and of course references to ghetto life. Add booty calls for good measure. Stir comprehensively with heavier than lead beats and stark somewhat cool production and you have the latest release from Trick Daddy.

Back By Thug Demand is never going to rewrite the genre or for that matter be an album that necessarily garners classic status. For the most part it ticks all the right boxes with a tight often claustrophobic delivery and some pristine production on the backing.

In places things get a little patchy, I defy anyone to listen to the soft porn role play fantasy of ‘Tonight’ without either cringing or laughing. However there are some genuinely good moments that draw your attention such as Lights Off (with International Jones) that for me stands out as a real highlight.

As a whole it’s not a terrible representation of its genre by any stretch of the imagination and in its favour it has a less commercial sheen than many of its counterparts that gives it a slight edge in places. However the fact that in terms of content it offers very little of originality meaning that unless you are a fan of the genre it might be an idea to approach with caution.
