O.K for one reason or another I’m coming to the party a little bit late with this review. But when something is worth shouting about then I guess being fashionably out of time is perfectly excusable. Thanks to 6Music and myspace.com my current favourite single is courtesy of Brighton based three piece, The Pipettes.

“Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me” follows in the tradition of all those late fifties and sixties girl groups right from the title straight through to that brimming with energy rawness that a lot of those recordings possessed.

Think Brill Building, think Spector. This is all close harmonies and a thick set 60’s pop/Motown backdrop. As a single it soars, and just when I thought the lead track was the best I could hope for there are respectable showings on the flip side(s) of this release (available on two 7” in white vinyl and CD). “Dirty Mind” and “Judy” continue in a slightly more light hearted fashion than the romantic warnings of the A side. As well as a more ethereal mix of the lead track (“Your Guitars Are Wasted On Me”), this is the first single of the year to make me grin from ear to ear.

And if you don’t believe me then do the old try before you buy routine. Have a listen at their myspace page and ponder what really should be at the top of the hit parade.
